Increasing Energy Density

Energy density is paramount in many energy storage applications, including aerospace, electric vehicles, and portable electronics. Radical improvements in energy density enable a range of exciting technological developments, such as advanced wearable devices and long-range electric vehicles. Such improvements require a holistic approach that reduce volume and mass at material, cell, and system level. In this area, StorageX faculty work on:

  • Developing new electrode materials (intercalation, conversion, etc.) with increased material-level energy density
  • Developing cell-level devices and strategies that improve system-level energy density, such as smart separators, low mass current collectors, and novel electrode and cell designs
  • Developing optimized battery management systems and algorithms to maximize battery performance
