Stanford has long been a leading center of geothermal research. The Stanford Geothermal Program focuses on developing reservoir engineering techniques to facilitate the efficient production of geothermal resources. Other research includes developing geothermal sensor systems that can withstand extreme, harsh environments; understanding the chemical and physical processes of geothermal energy; and applying hydraulic fracturing to conventional and enhanced geothermal systems.
