Our 140-year-old electric grid was built for generators simply to ramp up and down in response to consumer demand. A two-way, dynamic system of balancing supply and demand is critical for a modern electric system significantly dependent on intermittent renewable power. Smart meters and other utility devices combined with distributed resources like solar panels, energy storage, flexible demand, smart appliances, and automated controls on the consumer side of the meter will be key to integrating renewable supplies at least cost.
