Methane Leakage
Main content start
Stanford is a global leader in the study of methane leakage from oil and gas production, processing, and transport, as well as leaks in homes that use natural gas. Researchers have conclusively proven that U.S. environmental regulators have significantly underestimated methane emissions for years. Stanford engineers have also developed technologies for detecting and fixing the large leaks that are responsible for most fugitive emissions. One study found that converting atmospheric methane to atmospheric CO2 would buy time for climate mitigation at relatively low cost.
