Energy policy is often executed through taxation and government regulation of energy companies. A major research topic at Stanford is the effectiveness of taxing CO2 emissions in the United States and other countries, and how such a tax compares with other policies for reducing emissions, such as cap and trade. Researchers also examine a variety of issues related to the regulation of electric utilities, and gas and oil companies; and mandates for biofuels and renewable electricity supplies.
