Sumant Sinha is the Founder Chairman and CEO of ReNew Power, one of India’s largest clean energy companies. In a matter of six years since the company was founded, ReNew Power has organically grown to own over 3,000 MW of commissioned and under-construction clean energy assets (for perspective, India’s cumulative energy capacity across all energy forms is 310,000 MW). To fund this growth, Mr. Sinha has raised over $900 million in equity and $ 2.5 billion in debt capital, making ReNew one of India’s most well capitalized companies. After graduating from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) in 1992, Sumant worked as an investment banker with Citi and ING Barings in the U.S. and the U.K. In 2002, he moved to India to become Group Chief Financial Officer of India’s third-largest conglomerate, the Aditya Birla Group. Sumant was chosen to become the Founder CEO and spearheaded Aditya Birla Retail in 2007 and was instrumental in making the company one of India’s largest retail businesses. Following this, he joined Suzlon in 2008 and served as the Chief Operating Officer of India’s then largest wind energy company, until 2011. Recently on the cover of Forbes India, he is a frequent and sought after columnist for India’s leading business dailies and magazines like The Economic Times, Mint, Business Standard, Financial Express, Business Today and Businessworld and has also often been quoted in leading international media like NBC America, Financial Times, Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal. Sumant is also passionate about and often speaks extensively on market reforms, economic policy, governance, and climate change. Sumant holds the office of Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) – Northern Region and has been the Chairman of CII’s Renewable Energy Committee as well as CII’s Solar Task Force. He is also on the Advisory Board of Columbia’s University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) as well as on the Board of the Raj Center of Indian Economic Policy at Columbia University. A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management, and Columbia University, Sumant is also a Chartered Financial Analyst and a National Talent Scholar. Sumant was declared the “Industry Crusader of the Year” at the recently concluded Renewable Energy India Awards & Expo 2017 as well as the “Torch Bearer of the Year” at the India Solar Week Leadership Awards 2017. He was also the recipient of the prestigious “Renewable Energy Leader of the Year 2015” award at the National Awards for Excellence in Renewable Energy in July 2015 and the “Excellence Award- 2015 in Renewable Energy Sector” by the Energy and Environment Foundation in August 2015.
